Information for Prospective Students:

Students wanting to pursue a Ph.D. degree in my laboratory should contact me to discuss their research interests. The more details and specifics you can provide about your research goals the better.

If applying for the fall or spring semester, please send me your CV and other application materials well in advance of the deadlines (15 January and 15 September respectively). Students with interests in high-altitude adaptation, Andean biogeography of any species, or any aspect of waterfowl biology in the Americas or elsewhere are encouraged to apply. I am currently looking for highly motivated Ph.D. students with interests in integrative population biology and physiological genetics and who are willing to design their own research program and lead independent fieldwork. We currently are conducting field studies in Peru and Argentina annually. Positions are limited, but I anticipate recruiting at least one new graduate student each year for the following several years.

Most of my students earned their Ph.D. after obtaining a M.S. degree, but exceptional students are encouraged to apply directly to the Ph.D. program. Students with a M.S. or extensive undergraduate research experience will have an advantage. I do not normally admit M.S. students. If you are primarily interested in ecology or wildlife managment, you should consider contacting my colleagues Dr. Kevin Winker, Dr. Mark Lindberg, or Dr. Abby Powell.

Teaching and research assistantships recently ranged from $24,016 for beginning M.S. students to $27,830 for Ph.D. students after advancement to candidacy, and these include a tuition waiver for up to 10 credits each semester and medical benefits. The Department of Biology & Wildlife offers 4 semesters TA support for M.S. students (2 years) and 8 semesters for Ph.D. students (4 years) .

Applications are reviewed twice annually. The deadline for the fall semester is 15 January and the deadline for the spring semester is 15 September. For more details about the application procedure, please visit the Department of Biology & Wildlife graduate program web page. You can follow recent activitites in my lab on our Google+ website.
