The Polaroid Slide Scanner (SprintScan 35)
General information: The slide scanner is used to digitize photographic slides into a format that a computer can understand and display. It performs the same function as the flatbed scanner on your right (connected to computer 102), except with slides.
How to use the Slide Scanner:
- The first step is to get the computer to recognize the scanner.
- Turn on the slide scanner using the switch on the left back side of the device. You should hear a fan start, and the slot for the slide lights up.
- Double-click on the Wake up SprintScan icon on the desktop (it looks like a computer).
- Click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the dialog box that appears.
- Click the Refresh button near the bottom of the dialog.
- After the display has refreshed (the hourglass cursor will disappear), click OK.
- Next, run the SprintScan 35 Direct program
(Start Menu | Programs | SprintScan 35 | SprintScan 35 Direct)
- Click on the start button on the lower left of the desktop.
- Move the cursor to programs, then over and down to SprintScan 35, and click on SprintScan 35 Direct.
- The dialog on the left shows the options the program is using to scan your slide and the window on the right will display the image once you have scanned it.
- Insert a slide into the slot at the top of the slide scanner. The slide should be inserted with the lettering (Kodak Ektachrome or whatever) toward the back, and upside-down. It requires a little force to get the slide in.
- On the Control Panel dialog on the left, choose the type of film you are using by pressing the Film... button. Also select the Media (landscape is a horizontal slide and portrait is a vertical). If you are using black and white slide film, or want a greyscale image, select greyscale for the Image Type.
- Click the Preview button. After a minute or so, the image should appear in the window on the right of the desktop.
- The best way to determine the Scanner Resolution and Output parameters is to play around with them. Watch the white outlines to determine how much of the image the scanner is going to scan. Also pay attention to the Image Size (on the bottom of the preview window). Large images (greater than 1 Mb or so) won't fit on a floppy disk and will take a lot of time to work with.
- When you have the parameters set to your satisfaction, hit the Scan button. A dialog box will appear that asks you what format to save the image as, and where you want to save it. Again, keep in mind that these images can be very large! There is room on this hard drive for images, but be sure to delete them when you are finished! Do not use this machine as your personal storage machine as it will be periodically cleaned. If you wish, you can scan images directly to the Zip drive on the computer next to you. Follow the directions in the section above.
- Viewing the images once they are scanned can be done using LView (Start Menu | Programs | Other applications | LView) or Corel Presentations.
