Connecting to the Dell 2500N printer in Irving 303

The printer in the Irving 303 computer lab is a Dell 2500N. All the computers in the lab will print to this printer. You can also print to this printer from your own computer outside the lab. However, you must be in the same subnet (45), which means you must reside in Irving 1. The instructions and screen captures given here are from a Windows 2000 installation. You will find a Windows XP installation to be similar.

Adding the Printer

  1. From the Printer Control Panel, double-click Add Printer, and then click Next.

  2. Select Local Printer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.

    Click Next.

  3. Select Create a new port, and set the type to Standard TCP/IP Port.

    Click Next.

  4. This will open the Add Standard TCP/IP Port Wizard. Click Next.

  5. Enter the IP address 137.229.45.140. The wizard will create a port name for you.

    Click Next.

  6. The wizard isn't sure what this printer is so it opens the Additional Port Information window. Leave the device type set for Generic Network Card.

    Click Next.
    Click Finish.

  7. Back to the Add Printer wizard:

The Dell printers are not yet in the default list so click on Have Disk... Click on Browse and go to the public drive on Mercury for the drivers. The address is P:\DELL2500N. Once you've browsed to that directory, click Open and then click OK. (If you do not have access to Mercury, see the note below to download the drivers to your PC.)

  8. Now select which driver you want to install:

You will almost always want to install the PCL driver. If you want to print postscript (PS) files, you may choose to install that driver as well, but you'll need to run a second Add Printer procedure to do that. For now, select Dell (PCL) for manufacturer and Dell Laser Printer S2500 for printer and then click Next.

  9. Name your printer. Accept the default or give it a name. You can then make this your default printer if you want. Then click Next.

  10. Specify whether you want to share this printer through your computer. You probably don't want to do this. Then click Next.

  11. Specify whether you want to print a test page (Yes/No) and click Next.

  12. Completing the Add Printer Wizard:

Click Finish. The drivers will be installed and you should be ready to print.

Note: If you are not connected to Mercury, you'll need to download the drivers to your own computer for step 7. Click on this button to download the file and save it to your hard drive:

Go to this file you just saved (Dell_AAA_Win2KXP_Drivers_EN.exe) and double-click it to extract the files. You can specify where they will be put or accept the default. Now when you get to step 7 and you click on Have Disk, browse to where you extracted these files, click Open and then click OK, and continue with step 8.

Happy Computing!
