How to submit Samples for the ABI Genetic Analyzers

General information for submitting samples

Generally we run samples on the ABI 3100 with a 50 cm array and Pop6 and on the ABI 3130xl with a 50cm array and Pop7. See Instrument Set-up for information on which set-up you should use or talk to a Core Lab Tech. If you need special requirements please contact the Core Lab. Samples submitted in plates and tubes are charged differently. See the fee schedule for details. To take advantage of plate pricing samples should be submitted in multiples of 16. Samples in plates are charged on a per run basis (16 samples equals one run). For information on loading plates follow this link. If you submit in bulk, 48 samples or more at one time, you will be charged on a per well basis instead of a per run basis. 96-well plates are available for purchase in the Core Lab. You will need to enter your sample names into the data sheet for the instrument or samples will be named by well number only. You can get a data sheet template file from the Core Lab if you prefer to enter sample names into your computer. Samples are processed in the order they are signed up for. Sign up ahead of time if you need to have results by a certain date. Please check for time availability with a lab tech when you sign up. Data files can be picked up in person with a jump drive, CD, or Zip disk or they can be posted to the Core web page and are password protected; please contact the Core Lab for a username and password.

Note: Please be aware that lab work does not always work the first time. It is best to submit at least one test run with 16 samples (wells) when you are trying something you have not run before. If you want to start with a 96-well plate with all your samples we won't stop you, but if they fail and the Core Lab Techs determine it is not a problem with the sequencer you will be charged for the runs.
