The Alaska Basic Neuroscience Program (ABNP) strives to expand and stimulate basic neuroscience research with a focus on neuroprotection and adaptation at the cellular and molecular level and related regulatory mechanisms at system levels.  The interdisciplinary research effort of the ABNP constitutes an integral part of the UAF initiative aiming at health disparities of Native Alaskan and arctic populations.  It is the strategic goal of the University of Alaska Fairbanks to function as a national center of excellence and international leader in arctic research.

The ABNP is supported by grant U54, a Specialized Neuroscience Research Program (SNRP) grant, through the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). The mission of SNRPs is to enhance and strengthen both the quality and intensity of basic neuroscience research at Minority Institutions and other 'non-research-intensive' institutions.
